"Pony Boy"

Street Pharmacy’s latest release entitled “Ponyboy” draws its thematic inspiration from SE Hinton’s 1967 classic coming of age novel “The Outsiders.” The story and song centre around protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis, as he struggles to determine what is right and what is wrong with the whole of society whilst growing up in a world subdivided by social class. Ponyboy and his gang of greasers consider themselves on the fringes of society — thus the title of the novel.

Lead vocalists and songwriter, Ryan Guay was particularly inspired by this novel as a part of the Métis community. “Growing up Métis in Welland, you kind of feel as if you are caught between two worlds,” he said. “As a kid, it was easy to empathize with some of the struggles Ponyboy and his friends experienced in the story, especially their troubles with the posh kids from the other side of town. Welland had a vibe like that — a bridge and a canal literally separate the Francophone and Métis population from the rest of the city. The main message of the story is to stay good and to do the right thing no matter what the circumstance is, no matter how difficult it may be. I think that’s a great message.”

“Ponyboy” contains elements of ska and reggae, punk vocalizations as well as folk-Americana, making it one of Street Pharmacy’s most unique fusions to date. This is the second time Guay has worked with string player, Mike Tompa (Silverstein, First Ghost), making for an epic orchestral ending.
