Name: Ed the Sock
What did you want to be when you grew up? Bionic
Where did you start your radio career? How did you get that first job?
I spent 14 years as a VJ on Muchmusic, which kinda branded me as some kind of music aficionado, and I’m just coasting on past glories.
Career highlights pre-The Rock? Breaking the Cable 10 Community TV industry by making a show people actually wanted to watch.
Career highlights on The Rock? Everyday is a career highlight! Okay…for real, starting Socktoberfest with The Rock and making a difference for people who have wound up living on the streets in the winter. I can’t even stand getting into my cold car in the winter! Also, becoming besties with Johnny and Rickey from Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Hobbies you’d like to share? Hobbies…yes. Like to share? Not especially. Just a lot of reading books. Starting to paint self-portraits and other crap to peddle online, but that stops being a hobby when money is involved.
Most embarrassing moment? Can’t think of one. There have probably been a few, but I move on quickly.
Favourite job before radio? VJ on Muchmusic, 1994 to about 2003.
Least-favourite job before radio? VJ on Muchmusic, 2003 - 2005 (after it jumped the shark, so I quit).
Do you have a nickname? If so, what is it and where did it originate? I think “The Sock” is pretty self-explanatory.
If you could choose your own nickname, what would it be? Only losers choose their own nickname. Pathetic.
Subject you achieved your best marks in high school? Pissing off teachers.
Pet peeves? There isn’t enough space for all of them, but two that come up frequently: Butter tarts, they look like an infection in pastry; The Tragically Hip, to me they sound like an alley full of cats in heat.
Favourite movies? E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars (the original), Escape from New York, Throw Momma from the Train
Favourite albums? “Classics by Candlelight” by Zamfir, master of the pan flute.
Favourite concerts? I generally don’t like concerts. Too many people, too little attention to hygiene. The bands also start screwing around with different versions of the songs because they are bored playing the same thing night after night, and I want to hear the songs I like, not some prolonged period of musical self-indulgence.
If you didn't work in radio, what would be your dream job? Barber.
And if you didn’t work in radio or your dream job, what do you think you’d be employed at now? Damned if I know.
Got any pets? Yes, 5 cats from the same litter I discovered outside. I love dogs too, have had dogs, but a dog will press its nose to anyone’s butt, but when a cat likes you, it’s sincere.
What is one place you would not want to be caught dead at? If I’m dead, what do I care?
If you were forced to spend the day with Ed The Sock what would you do? Excuse me? Who put this question here? Anyone would be lucky to spend the day with me! I’ll bet people would pay for the privilege! Not that I would want to spend the day with someone who’d pay money to spend a day with me. Creepy.
Retirement plans? After almost 40 years in Canadian media, I have earned enough money to quit tomorrow and live out my life in comfort. As long as I died by the weekend.
